Starbucks Coffee

After all the hype and hoopla, people going gaga on the social networking sites, Starbucks opened their first outlet in Chennai in Phoenix Market City in Velachery !

I am not a big fan of Starbucks, but I wouldn’t mind going there once in a while for a cup of Americano and some side eats.  It’s not just the coffee, its also the ambience and comfort of having coffee in a cozy place.
It is just a day old in Chennai and there were steady stream of customers walking in while I was there.  For those who have been to Starbucks outside India, it is the joy of trying out a familiar place, and for those who have never been there, it is just to see what the heck it is 😀
I ordered a Short Americano, a Grilled Chicken Salad Sandwich and a Murgh Kathi Wrap !  I knew this place was going to be pricey and sure it was.  I paid 110 for the Americano, 160 for the chicken wrap and 170 for the sandwich.  No complaints as far as the pricing is concerned.  It is an international brand and inside a Mall and I wouldn’t expect them to serve a coffee for Rs 50.  This place is slightly more expensive than Costa Coffee, which is also located in the same Mall.
Starbucks Coffee in Chennai has become a prime topic of discussion on many food forums in social networking sites about how an International Coffee brand is going to sustain in the Coffee capital of India, Chennai.  I don’t expect Starbucks to convert all the Filter Kaapi lovers into their customers, but sure It’s going to be a hit with the younger generation and we’ll see more outlets opening up in the coming days!

  1. Hi Murali,
I am not a fan of Star Bucks either.. I only wish the young ones do not get carried away with the hype and feel that drinking in starbucks is a matter of pride… Quoting a Vijay song here ” Bandha ethuku da.. Konjam adanguda.. Nethu vara nair kada bun thanada”

    1. It’s a phase and this too shall pass. Soon they’ll realize that it is not everything and its just a coffee shop! The same hype was there when KFC and McD opened shops in Chennai ! Youngsters thronging the place like crazy 🙂 Now they probably realize there are better vfm options here ! It’s good that we have more and more options to decide 🙂

  2. Dont you think its gonna end up being an outlet….you just wanna SHOW OFF being at …rather than enjoying the coffee experience…

    1. Hi Majid, Not necessarily so. 🙂
Yes, to some extent it is like wearing a branded shirt or a watch and that element of showing off exists. A visit to Starbucks will sound great probably for the first few times, and soon that is going to fade away and people will start to enjoy the coffee too !

      1. Yep what you say seems right, once the initial buzz dies down….then you’ll have the actual fans of SBX turning up.
Being a coffee conn myself…..i like SBX once in a while.
