Namaste Restaurant and German Bakery, Mahabalipuram

Myself and three other friends managed a quick weekend getaway to Mahabalipuram and we spotted a nice restaurant in the heart of the town, managed by a family from Nepal! We were there for breakfast on a Sunday morning after quite a heavy drinking session on a Saturday night. ๐Ÿ™‚ Needless to say, we were quite tired and hungry and did not want to venture very far for breakfast. Vivanta by Taj Fisherman’s Cove

Just wanted to take a short relaxing break with family and staying in Chennai, resorts in ECR were the obvious choices. Checked the availability, most of them were sold out due to Christmas/holidays. However, managed to get a room in this property. Booked through Travelguru portal, redirected from Tripadvisor. The booking procedure was easy and simple.

Seagull

During our stay at Vivanta by Taj Fisherman’s Cove, we ate twice in this restaurant, a dinner and a breakfast the following morning. Overall, the taste of each and every dish was wonderful, no complaints whatsoever. However, there are a few very minor incidents that were not-very-pleasant and probably could have been avoided.

Mahabalipuram, a set on Flickr.

I was there on a solo trip to click some pictures and that was achieved. Nothing out of the ordinary, just average. It could probably have a very historical background, I am not discounting that fact. I am just saying from a layman’s perspective. Also I should mention that the place was clean.
If you plan to visit Mahabalipuram, lets say the beach, tiger caves, etc etc, this is a must-see. Otherwise just for this, travel from Chennai is not worth it. People with extreme interest in history, sculptures can visit.
Photographers, better early or very late. A lot of schools arrange for excursion to this place and it can be crowded. Getting a shot without children in frame will be impossible ๐Ÿ™‚
People on the way from Chennai to Pondicherry or vice versa can drop in for about an hour for a pleasant break.
Overall, just ordinary.

Visited March 2013

Golden Sun Beach Resort

We have visited this place with a gang of friends few times earlier to spend one full day at the premises, but this time, we decided to stay overnight. In a way we were familiar with the place.

Agenda for this trip: Catch up with a couple of college friends and spend time chatting and drinking.

Checked in around 18:45, no prior reservation, just walked in. It was ok. Paid around 3400 INR for a AC double room with an extra bed.

Room was just reasonably ok, definitely not comfy, but clean though. Low ceiling, make sure not to lift up your hands when the fan is on, it is really that low. AC and TV worked fine, the lighting in the room is dim, not enough if you plan to read. Bed mattress is not soft, but adjustable. Carry your towels, the one you get are very very old, but still clean and washed.

We decided to have a few drinks, asked them to set up a table in the lawn, just opposite to the bar, that was very good. The interiors of the Bar is not very inviting, so definitely better on the lawn. Watch out for mosquitoes, have a mosquito repellant cream handy. After a few drinks, either they go away or you dont feel them anymore ๐Ÿ˜‰
When people complain about the food, it is most likely about the buffet that you get when you pay INR 400-something. Almost all that we ordered was hot and very tasty. Service was pretty quick and they didnt disappoint. The Bar/Restaurant Manager was present to check what we wanted now and then. Had a break, had a stroll and resumed our session again, ended with dinner. No complaints here at all, prices moderate.

Simultaneously, there was another gang of about 10-15 men, obviously having fun among themselves, lot of drinks, dance, loud music, using the swimming pool, etc. It definitely was not an issue for the three of us. In fact we were enjoying the fast, peppy numbers that they played, but with family, it probably wouldnt be too comfortable in those circumstances.

Room service was ok. We asked for two bottles of water, and was delivered to the room within 10 minutes. Since the property is spread out, expect a slight delay in room service.

Swimming pool was clean and well-maintained. We didnt use it this time, but have used it on previous trips. Get your swimming costume, or you can buy it from the store there, not very cheap though.

Woke up early around 05:45 AM and took a leisure walk to the beach. It was pleasant, got a nice view of the sunrise, and by 07:30, we decided to check out.

Overall, for us, it was absolutely wonderful. What we came for, we got. No complaints whatsoever.

Verdict: Yes for trip with friends, Think twice or Probably not with family

MGM Beach Resort

Stayed here with family for a night on 13 Jan 2012.
Got delayed and reached around 18:00 hrs, wherein I could have checked in around noon. Check in formalities were normal. Enquired with the concerned person if I can get a delayed check out around 16:00 the next day and the answer was a pleasing NO ๐Ÿ™‚ However he was kind to offer the use of facilities like Swimming pool, etc until 16:00 free of charge.
Spent sometime around and went to the restaurant for dinner. The buffet Spread was ok, food was tasty, the bar was well-stocked.
Room was comfortable, but was slightly far away from the restaurant. Ask for a room closer if you have elders with you.
Next day morning, had a good view of sunrise, used the Swimming pool (opens only at 07:00). Kids loved it.
The breakfast was good, restaurant nice and airy, but the nuisance that the crows cause spoils the mood. At one point it came so close to the table that the kids were frightened. So had to opt to move inside the AC restaurant. The play area for kids was good.
Overall, the place is good for a weekend break.
